GORILLAS

Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall and can weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often fight. In fact they are peaceful animals. Gorillas live in small family groups of about 15. In a group there is one strong, older male, some young males, and a few females with their babies. They move slowly around a large area of jungle eating leaves and bushes. In some ways gorillas are very like humans. When they are happy, they laugh and wave their arms. When they are angry, they beat their chests. When they are sad, they cry. But they cry quietly, without any tears.
Unfortunately, people hunt and kill gorillas. They also cut down and burn their trees. There are now only about 10,000 gorillas left in the world.

DANCING BIRDS

Many birds dance to attract a mate, especially in springtime. From pigeons to parrots, birds like to show themselves off by dancing. Have a look at the birds near where you live and see what kinds of dances they perform. Ostriches are the only birds which dance for fun. Early in the morning, the birds gather and begin to dance in circles on tip-toes with their wings outstretched. Very soon, the whole group joins in with the twirling dance. Scientists think that this dance is purely an expression of joy at being alive!

ROCK  MUSIC

Rock music is part of popular music today. It is played and listened in almost every countries in the world. Rock and roll was the name given to the music that developed in the early 1950’s. It is believed that the term rock and roll was first used by a disk jockey,Alan Freed. In 1955, records of a young singer from Tennessee, Elvis Presley, were heard across the US.
After he appeared on nation-wide television, Elvis Presley’s singing and his performing style came to mean rock and roll all over the world. Then came Bill Haley and The Comets. Rock mainly became the music of the young. They understood its beat and sound, and its lyrics.
The 1970’s were the time of big developments in the rock industry. Rock became a very big business, earned more money annually than any other form of entertainment including the film industry.

PUPPETS

Puppets have been used for centuries in Indonesia to tell the stories of the ancient epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabarata, as well as ancient myths. Modern stories also utilize this ancient art form for contemporary audiences. Puppets fall into two major classifications, wayang kulit the leather or
shadow puppet of Central Java, and wayang golek-wooden puppets of West Java.
There are several varieties of wooden puppets. Some expatriats enjoy collecting the same character by various artisans, or all the characters in a scene or story, or just characters that strike their fancy. Good guys, bad guys, gods, demons, nobles, giants, clowns, princes and princesses and monkeys, all can be found in traditional puppet forms. Less commonly seen are the Wayang Klitik, a flat wooden puppet.

PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS

Percussion means striking. All percussion instruments make musical sounds when struck by the hands, by the fingers, or by some suitable implement. Bells and gongs, bars of wood or
metal, and even bowls and thin stones make fine percussion instruments. The orchestras of Eastern people sometimes have a wonderful variety of these and other kinds of percussion instruments, including
drums of every size and shape.
But in Western symphony orchestra percussion instruments are not very numerous. The bowl-shaped kettledrums, or timpani, are .almost always present. They give a clear, definite note and a sonorous tone that can be as soft or as loud as the player wishes. Other types of drums may also be used. Cymbals are brass plates that are clashed or jangled together. The triangle is a metal rod left open at the corner. The xylophone is a row of wooden bars.
The glockenspiel has metal bars that sound ringing and enchanting. It is often played by a keyboard, called a celesta. Only the kettledrums are regular percussion sections of the orchestra in Western music.

SHIP SINKS – ALL RESCUED

Penang, Sat. The holiday cruise ship; Sun Vista sank in the Straits of Malacca yesterday after its engine caught fire. The ship was on its way to Singapore from Thailand. All the 461 passengers and 632 crew members were rescued. The fire started in the engine room at about 2.00 p.m.
The passengers were moved to the open upper decks for safety. Some passengers song My Heart Will Go On while black smoke was billowing from the engine room. The captain gave the order to evacuate the ship at 5.30 p.m. to all crew.
